INTERVIEW 2

I might as well tell you now but I got rejected  from interview 1. I was sort of expecting it and prepared myself (talked with tutor) for the bad news but it still does knock your confidence down. The reason I was given was my portfolio was unsuitable..... ho hum!
So how did yesterday (23/02/2011) go?! I was sat in the graphics studio waiting and got called in into a room. I was greeted by two tutors (smiley-happy-shook-your-hands) and was told it'd be an informal interview and that we'd go through my portfolio and whilst they looked through my sketch books I'd be able to ask them questions. I tried my best to be confident and not get nervous and tongue tied (often happens and I did). I told them about my work in collation to the briefs and I *think* I answered their questions reasonably well (why graphic design yada).
I REALLY hope I get an offer because the course/place is amazing and they support my love for crafting *HI5*!!
Anyway, I should hear back in 3 weeks but here's the bad news. They apparently got 500 applications, are interviewing 200...... and have 55 places.
Wish me luck x x x

NOBROW

The founder of Nobrow recently came in to talk to us all at G.I.D.
If your into illustration/graphic arts I'd recommend getting the Nobrow magazine
No text (if my memory is correct) just pure AWESOME work by a range of artists. PLUS each issue is themed, so all the collaborators had the same restrictions and its interesting to see how varied the responses are.
My particular favourites are issue 1 and 4

I LOVE

how my tutor can read me like a book. When I say I'm fine he knows I'm upset and when I say I get it he knows I'm confused.

RASTAMOUSE

I love this and I'm 19.

INTERVIEW 1

I WILL REVEAL ALL THE PLACES I'VE APPLIED TO WHEN THE PROCESS IS OVER.

So yesterday (17/01/11) I had my first 'proper' interview since applying for F.A.D. I've heard many great things about the uni and it was ranked as one of my top choices, so I was naturally very nervous it would be the first one.
The town is wonderful, has absolutely everything you need in a small compacted area (has same stuff as Leeds just not as spread out) and very close to the uni (5 minute walk).
Anyway the process was we had to do this mini essay not directly relating to G.D just a reflection of ourselves while the tutors would review all our portfolios. 3rd year students would then give us a 10 minute tour round the building and then in groups of 5 we had to pick a piece of work and discuss it briefly with the tutors.
So how did my interview go..............hmmm. The tutors didn't really question the other candidates till they got to me. I'm guessing they had written notes about our work so they 'knew' what our work was like. Anyway I got grilled, not in a bad bitchy way but I had to defend myself on why I wanted to do this particular course and not illustration. They said their emphasis was more the conceptual side and not necessarily a huge importance on crafting (which is something I believe in......good ideas needs a good execution). And I had to really make sure it was the course for "me"- I got minus brownie points for not being at the open day. All that was pretty much directed to me, in fact I think they were facing and only looking at me.

How do I feel? Well, at least they're honest. The course "wouldn't be for me" seemed to be the main theme.

MYSPACE

I 'pimped' my desk hahaha. Rodarte and Moss <3
M.B drew this for me. Cute and slightly creepy...

Whats this?! I have my own official space? Came back from reading week and we all got allocated new random spaces (to stop us from talking to our friends) to work in from now on. So huzzah for new space. I'm quite lucky that the area I'm in (shared between 5) we all have tables of our own, because some class mates areas have to  be shared between 9!

B.W AND I DO SOME ACTING

You can see my spectacular acting at the 0:18 mark. HEAVY sarcasm btw.
Check out my friends (theeskimoway) response to the Ugly Duckling and Berlin brief.

OTHER G.I.D WORK

Latest work presented for assessment. Dun dun dunnnnn.
 E.S
He's very good at what he does and annoyingly ALWAYS manages to turn it out at the last minute (except this time).

PUPPET: START TO FINISH

Original idea
Hand fabric manipulation!
Blogger why do you insist on rotating my images?! Oh and final result!

Brief: craft a 3 dimensional, moving character. The character is to be based on you. It could represent a hidden side of your personality, your alter ego, your ‘Id’ or a construct which you present to the world. You must consider this character within the context of Puppetry. It must be constructed in such a way that it can be made to move, even appear alive.
So yeah the puppet is me. A fashion ghost-thing. This wasn't the original idea I wanted to do a puppet of my beloved duck-dog character but it sort of moved on to this ghost idea. I wanted to incorporate some textiles into it as you know I love and miss it, so the making of the body was lots of fun as I got to mess around with decoration techniques.
Also you may of noticed the cage is on the outside now which I think adds to the whole look ( I had Elizabethan images in my head whilst making this). The red ink is the face and wish it would of bleed more nicely but I think the polyester makes it a 'biatch' to dye. Obviously my puppet can only bob up on down but it also makes a cool handbag accessory. OK, I did totally try and blag that one.

ESSAY

Something I didn't expect to do during my foundation year! I don't actually mind writing. I quite like it. Its just I've been told I'm 'bad' at it (grammar yada yada).
Essay brief: Discuss communication in terms of audience, practitioners, context and visual language using one of the following contemporary disciplines:
Illustration
Advertising
Graphic Design
Photography
Animation
Film
When I got the brief I pretty much knew what I wanted to do. I had been reading up on Terry Richardson (Google if unfamiliar with his work) anyway and the whole hysteria surrounding his work I thought would make a good essay. Plus out of the other topics doing it on photography was the one I felt must comfortable writing a 1500 word essay on.
Long story short.... I passed! I found out yesterday and I am so pleased as I really thought I'd refer. Plus the comments he wrote makes me feel slightly bit better about my writing as S.R was the one who said I needed help!

MONOGRAPH- N0 42

My friend walked into my class and threw this at me. I asked him later what it was and he said it was a gift.

CITIES PROJECT- BERLIN

Cities brief= visual diary/investigate city
I personally became fascinated with shoes and cars whilst in Berlin (I guess you could say I had a transport theme going on). I spent most of my time drawing quick sketches of passer by's. I'm also starting to experiment with cut outs and colour which is proving to be fun.
